Building a useful website is about more than creating attractive pages. A good digital product should make information easier to find, organize large amounts of content in a practical way, and give users a simple experience from the moment they arrive.
That was the idea behind one of our local web projects: Bangladesh Yellow Pages, an online local directory designed to help people discover businesses and services through a searchable web platform.
When we worked on this project, online business directories were becoming an increasingly useful way for people to find information about local businesses. Instead of searching through disconnected sources, users could use a single directory to search for businesses based on keywords, categories, and locations.
For our team at Dropndot, the Bangladesh Yellow Pages project was an exciting opportunity to build a local directory around those needs.
A Local Directory Built for Bangladesh

The concept behind Bangladesh Yellow Pages was straightforward: create a dedicated online directory where businesses could be listed and users could search for the information they needed.
However, creating a useful directory involves more than simply displaying a collection of business names.
A directory needs an organized structure. Users need to be able to search, narrow down results, and find relevant businesses without having to go through hundreds of unrelated listings.
That made search and categorization an important part of the project.
The Bangladesh Yellow Pages website was designed to allow users to search using keywords or location, while also providing filtering options based on category and location.
This approach gave users multiple ways to find businesses depending on what information they already had.
Someone who knew the type of business they were looking for could start with a keyword. Someone searching within a particular area could use location-based discovery. Category and location filters could then help narrow the results further.
Making Business Information Easier to Discover
A local directory is useful only when finding information is simple.
With Bangladesh Yellow Pages, our goal was to make the discovery process straightforward. Rather than presenting users with an overwhelming list of businesses, the platform provided different ways to refine a search.
The ability to search by keyword and location was particularly important because local business searches often depend on both what someone is looking for and where they want to find it.
For example, a user might be looking for a particular type of service in a particular area. Combining keyword and location-based discovery creates a more practical experience than relying on a basic list of businesses.
The category structure added another layer of organization, helping users explore businesses according to their areas of service.
A Platform for Businesses, Not Just Visitors
Another important part of the project was giving businesses an opportunity to participate in the directory.
Businesses could add their own listings through the “Add Your Business” option available on the website.
To add a listing, users first needed to create an account. The registration process was designed to be straightforward, allowing businesses to create an account before submitting their information.
This made the website more than a simple directory maintained from a single source. It provided a structure through which businesses could become part of the directory themselves.
For a local business directory, that type of functionality is important. The more useful and accessible the listing process is, the easier it becomes to build a broader collection of business information.
Building the Website With Our Own CMS
From a development perspective, the Bangladesh Yellow Pages project was also an interesting experience for our team.
We developed the project using dropncms, our custom content management system.
Using our own CMS gave us the flexibility to structure the project around the specific requirements of a local directory rather than treating it as a generic website.
A directory platform has different content-management needs from a standard company website or a simple blog. Businesses, categories, locations, accounts, listings, and search functionality all need to work together within the same system.
The project gave us an opportunity to apply our development experience to those requirements and build a platform around the actual needs of the directory.
Design Was an Important Part of the Project

Functionality was only one part of the Bangladesh Yellow Pages project.
The visual presentation of the website was also important to us.
At the time, we had looked at a number of Yellow Pages and business-directory websites from different countries. We wanted Bangladesh Yellow Pages to have its own visual identity rather than simply follow the same presentation used by other directories.
A directory can contain a large amount of information, so its design needs to help users navigate that information without making the experience unnecessarily complicated.
The project therefore combined directory functionality with a distinctive visual approach.
For our team, finding that balance between design, usability, and functionality was one of the enjoyable parts of developing the website.
What We Learned From the Project
Every project gives a development team an opportunity to learn something new.
The Bangladesh Yellow Pages project involved several elements that needed to work together: business listings, user accounts, categories, locations, search, filtering, and content management.
Working on these different components helped us continue developing our experience with local web applications and content-driven platforms.
It also reinforced something we have always believed at Dropndot: a successful website should be built around the people who will actually use it.
Technology is important, but technology alone does not make a website useful.
The structure, navigation, search experience, content organization, and visual presentation all need to work together.
Why Local Business Directories Matter
Local directories serve a simple but valuable purpose: they bring business information together in one place.
For users, a directory can provide a starting point when looking for a company, product, or service.
For businesses, being part of a directory can provide another way to present their information online.
The concept is especially useful when the directory is organized around a particular market or geographic area.
Bangladesh Yellow Pages was developed with that local focus in mind. Rather than creating another general-purpose website, the project was designed around businesses and locations within Bangladesh.
One of Our Early Local Web Projects
For Dropndot, Bangladesh Yellow Pages was more than another website development project.
It was an opportunity to work on a local directory platform, explore different approaches to search and content organization, and apply our own content management technology to a real-world web application.
Projects like this also contributed to our broader experience in developing websites and software solutions for different requirements.
We believe that development is a continuous process. Every project brings new requirements, new challenges, and new opportunities to improve.
That mindset has remained important to us as we continue working with web technologies and developing digital solutions.
Looking Back at Bangladesh Yellow Pages
The Bangladesh Yellow Pages project represents an important part of our earlier work in local web development.
The platform brought together business listings, search, location and category filtering, user accounts, and business-submission functionality within one website.
It also gave our team the opportunity to combine our development experience with our custom dropncms platform and create a directory designed specifically for the Bangladeshi market.
Looking back, projects like Bangladesh Yellow Pages remind us that good web development is not simply about writing code.
It is about understanding a problem, organizing information, creating a useful user experience, and building technology around those requirements.
That was the goal behind Bangladesh Yellow Pages—and it remains a principle that continues to guide the way we approach web development at Dropndot.
